The Third Night

On the third night, as the clock struck three,
A tempting demon surfaced in my mind with glee.

"Was the wait truly worthwhile?" it inquired,
As shadows whispered secrets, unanticipated and sired.

"We'll meet again, in the realm of dream's tire."

                       ***
How time has slipped, reasons scattered in the breeze,
The snowman's joy sacrificed, lost to spring's tease.
Mad notions flooded my conscious mind with ease.

"What if the third night fails to appease?"

In the catatonic struggles of these cerebral wars,
I heard echoes of a moment murdered, reopening old sores.

"Don't be absurd; embrace each nightly dread,
In the dreamtime, your alluring demon will be wed."

Today, I kept the window open, embracing the light,
With each passing second, I inhaled the stagnant night.
Every breath painted my insides with a shadowy blight.

I was content.
I was sure.
Finally, my alluring demon, an allure pure,
And I heard it murmur,

"Was the wait truly worth the allure?"
